List Servers

A "list server" is an electronic mailing list. Mailing lists allow subscribers to communicate with one another on a given subject by electronic mail. This is done through a "list server," that is, a computer which accepts incoming messages and distributes them to all the subscribers on the list.

It is very important to understand that there are usually two e-mail addresses associated with a mailing list. One is the address for administrative duties, such as subscribing and unsubscribing people to and from the list. The other address is for messages intended to be distributed to all subscribers. More on this under "Subscribing and Unsubscribing" below.

Listed here are several list servers that deal with vector organisms. The subscription information provided was correct at the time of listing. Please notify this site's Webmaster of any suggested changes, additions, deletions or other problems.

Subscribing and Unsubscribing

Usually you subscribe or unsubscribe to a mailing list by sending e-mail to the list server at the addresses given above. Generally (but not in all cases) these instructions are as follows:

To Subscribe - leave the subject line blank and in the text of the message type the following:

subscribe name_of_mailing_list Robin Hood

[Replace "Robin Hood" with your real name]

To UNsubscribe - leave the subject line blank and in the text of the message type the following:

unsubscribe name_of_mailing_list
or
signoff name_of_mailing_list

Please turn off any signature file on your message or you may receive an error.

The list server then usually sends a message requesting a reply to verify the subscription process. Simply use a REPLY command and type, as the text, the letters:

OK

Then the list server usually sends a message stating you have been added to the list, plus more detailed instructions as to how to send messages to the list. Save this reply in case you wish to unsubscribe from the list in the future.

Rules and Suggestions

Replying to any e-mail sent from a mailing list and asking to unsubscribe will not unsubscribe you from the list. You must follow the instructions given you by the mailing list (or as seen above) to unsubscribe.

Replying to a message from the list sends a message to the entire list. So please be sure that is what you want to do. If you want to send a message to only one or two other people, then do not use reply but start a new message with their e-mail addresses.

If you do wish to send a message to the entire list, then please practice good e-mail protocol and edit the message you are replying to so that just enough information is left to understand your reply. Nothing is worse then finding your mail box crammed with one long message that contains numerous other replies and useless routing information. Plus, one of the worse mistakes subscribers make on a list server is to copy the entire message back to the list or to the message originator with just a short response (such as: "You're right", "I agree with you." etc).
